The ice went out on May 7, 2014 and just in the nick of time because the loons were already back on the lake. Somehow they were able to navigate the open water along the shore and through the tunnel. With the ice out we knew we needed to work fast to get the loon platform in place. It would be a little tricky getting through the last bit of ice in the cove in front of Krueger’s boathouse but Margaret and Teresa were up for the task. Follow along with the slideshow to see how it all went down
Meanwhile, Dan and Sue Pagel knew that they needed to get their platform in place in Lover’s Bay….they could see that the loons were getting anxious. Within an hour a loon hopped onto the platform. Later, the other pair decided to call the second platform home too. What a thrill to once again have two nesting loon pairs to enjoy.
Dan also sent in these two amazing photos of the Blue Lake Outlet. What is normally a mere trickle has turned into a raging river! WOW!!!
Always remember to keep well away from nesting loons and make a point of letting your guests know as well. Fishermen should take special care to avoid fishing near loon nest sites. Recently a banded loon was admitted to Northwoods Animal Hospital with 2 hooks and 100 feet of braided line. They were able to remove the hooks & line endoscopically with the help of a local gastroenterologist. The lesson here – don’t fish near loons – spread the word!
